PetFoodRate editorial review

James Wellbeloved is the UK equivalent of Blue Buffalo: the trusted mainstream premium that vets do not object to. At 73/100 (B grade), the Adult Lamb and Rice formula is a clean single-protein recipe using 26 percent lamb, rice, barley, and no wheat, beef, or soy. It was one of the first UK brands to market hypoallergenic dog food in the 1990s, long before grain-free became trendy. JW is now owned by Mars (since 2020), which gives it massive distribution but raises questions about future formula changes. For now, the quality holds and it remains one of the best B-grade options in the UK market.

Compared to the competition

Both B grade (73 vs 76). JW is mono-protein lamb (hypoallergenic), BB is chicken with whole grains. If your dog has allergies, JW. If not, BB edges ahead on score.

Frequently asked questions

Has James Wellbeloved changed since Mars acquired it?

As of 2026, the formula remains unchanged. Mars has not reformulated the recipes, only expanded distribution. Watch for future changes though: Mars historically optimises for margin in acquired brands after 3 to 5 years.
