About
An independent service that scores pet food
PetFoodRate is an independent international rating service. We do not sell food. We are not a veterinary practice. We grade every pet food from A to E and explain why.
Why we built this
The pet food market is massive and opaque. Labels use jargon, comparative tests are rare, and pet owners trust marketing more than composition. We believe a clear and reproducible rating system helps everyone: the owner who wants to feed their animal better, the serious manufacturer whose quality becomes visible, and even the veterinarian who can point at a specific product instead of giving generic advice.
How we build the database
Our ingredient database is hand-composed. Every ingredient is reviewed for its nutritional profile, known risks, and species relevance. We rely on published scientific literature, FEDIAF and AAFCO data, and veterinary guidelines. Revisions are documented and dated.
Our editorial promise
- No payment ever changes a grade. Affiliate links fund the operation but do not touch scoring.
- Open methodology. Every grade is reproducible from our methodology page .
- No medical advice. For any veterinary question, consult a licensed professional.
- Data respect. We never sell your data. See our privacy policy .
How we monetize
We are transparent about this. The site is free for all users. We receive an affiliate commission when someone clicks a link to Chewy, Zooplus, Amazon, or another partner pet food marketplace, if the order goes through. That commission never touches the scoring, and brands cannot negotiate a grade upgrade. As the site grows, we will also display contextual advertising (never intrusive, never pop-up) and offer an optional premium subscription for advanced features.
What we are not
- We are not a veterinary practice. We do not diagnose.
- We are not a manufacturer. We have no commercial ties with any brand we rate.
- We are not a marketplace. We do not sell any product.
- We are not a black-box AI. Every grade is deterministic.
