Why this ingredient is used
Chicken fat is the most common named animal fat in pet food. It is highly palatable (dogs and cats love the taste), easy to digest, and provides a balanced mix of omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. Unlike vague 'animal fats', chicken fat is a specific identified source, which is why it scores higher on our transparency sub-score. It is rendered at 120 to 140 degrees from chicken skin and subcutaneous fat, then stabilised with tocopherols (vitamin E). Chicken fat provides about 9 calories per gram, making it the primary energy source in most dry pet food.
