Why this ingredient is used
Zinc is a critical trace mineral for skin integrity, immune function, wound healing, and reproductive health. Dogs need 120 mg per kg of dry food (AAFCO minimum). Zinc deficiency causes a specific skin condition called zinc-responsive dermatosis, most common in Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and other northern breeds that have genetically lower zinc absorption. These breeds often need zinc supplémentation above what standard kibble provides. In pet food, zinc is added as zinc sulfate, zinc oxide, or zinc chelate (the chelated form is better absorbed but more expensive).
