Why this ingredient is used

Salmon oil is the richest commercially available source of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids for pet food. EPA reduces inflammation (joints, skin, gut), while DHA supports brain development (critical for puppies and kittens) and retinal function. Salmon oil is added separately from the main protein because the extrusion process destroys omega-3s at high temperatures. It is typically sprayed onto the kibble surface after cooking, which is why kibble feels slightly oily. The quality difference between pharmaceutical-grade salmon oil and bulk fish oil rendering is significant: premium brands source from certified Norwegian or Scottish salmon farms.
