Carnilove honest review: the rising Czech grain-free brand
Carnilove is probably the least well-known brand in the European grain-free top 10 - and that is precisely what makes it worth investigating. While Taste of the Wild dominates the American-origin segment and Orijen attracts serious enthusiasts, Carnilove quietly builds a Czech range at 6.50 EUR/kg with scores that outperform some competitors costing twice as much.
We dissected the full range with no commercial relationship with Vafo Praha, the manufacturer. Version française disponible : Carnilove avis honnête.
Overall score - Carnilove Salmon Adult
| Dimension | Score | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | 87/100 | 35 percent |
| Nutrition | 88/100 | 20 percent |
| Undesirables | 90/100 | 20 percent |
| Transparency | 78/100 | 15 percent |
| Adaptability | 82/100 | 10 percent |
| Weighted total | 86/100 (A) |
The transparency sub-score is the only notable weakness. Vafo Praha does not publish its supplier list with the precision of Champion Petfoods (Orijen/Acana). This is the cost of the price point: 6.50 EUR/kg does not buy the documentation level of a 9.50 EUR/kg product, but it does buy a clean, honestly formulated recipe.
Vafo Praha: who makes Carnilove?
Carnilove is a brand from Vafo Praha, a Czech group founded in 1994 in Prague. This origin detail matters for understanding the brand's positioning.
Vafo Praha manufactures two main lines that appear to target the same market but position differently. Brit Care is the group's entry-level premium line, more accessible, available in Eastern European supermarkets and Western specialist retailers. Carnilove sits one step above: double-protein formulas, more precise sourcing (wild species from Central and Northern Europe), and more restrained packaging.
Both brands come out of the same ISO 22000 certified Czech factories. Carnilove simply benefits from more elaborate recipes and a "wild-caught" sourcing orientation that justifies the 1.30 EUR/kg premium over Brit Care.
The Czech Republic is now the third-largest European producer of premium pet food after France and Germany. Lower labour costs and proximity to Central European forests for wild game sourcing allow Vafo Praha to formulate products that compete with Irish or British brands at a substantially lower price.
Double protein: what it actually means
The "double protein" mention on Carnilove packaging deserves a precise explanation, because it can cover very different nutritional realities.
In Carnilove's case, the Salmon Adult formula lists at the head of its composition:
- Fresh salmon (28 percent)
- Dehydrated salmon (15 percent)
- Dehydrated turkey (12 percent)
- Sweet potato
- Peas
This is not double protein in the empty marketing sense. It is a nutritionally coherent technique. Fresh salmon provides a high concentration of amino acids and directly bioavailable omega-3 fatty acids. Dehydrated salmon compensates for the weight loss from water during cooking - without it, fresh salmon would "fall" much further down the list after extrusion. Dehydrated turkey adds a second source of amino acids, particularly methionine and lysine, to complete the salmon protein profile.
The result: 33 percent crude protein, 100 percent of animal origin. Zero plant protein used to reach that figure - a rarity at this price point.
Carnilove vs Taste of the Wild vs Acana comparison
| Product | Score | Price/kg | Protein | Origin | Grain-free |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orijen Original Adult | 92/100 A | 9.50 EUR | 38 percent | North America | Yes |
| Acana Wild Prairie | 90/100 A | 7.80 EUR | 31 percent | North America | Yes |
| Carnilove Salmon Adult | 86/100 A | 6.50 EUR | 33 percent | Europe | Yes |
| Taste of the Wild High Prairie | 88/100 A | 6.40 EUR | 32 percent | North America | Yes |
| Brit Care Salmon | 84/100 A | 5.20 EUR | 30 percent | Europe | Yes |
| Edgard & Cooper Chicken | 88/100 A | 7.20 EUR | 30 percent | Europe | No |
| Royal Canin Medium Adult | 58/100 C | 4.80 EUR | 22 percent | International | No |
The first observation is that Carnilove occupies a specific niche: more expensive than Brit Care or Taste of the Wild (which are price-equivalent), cheaper than Acana, with a protein profile that beats both. The differentiating criterion versus Taste of the Wild is European ingredient origin - an advantage for those who prioritise regional sourcing.
Compared to Taste of the Wild (reviewed in detail on PetFoodRate), Carnilove has the advantage of fresh meat at the top of its list (vs meal as first ingredient in TOTW High Prairie) and shorter geographic traceability. Taste of the Wild wins on protein source diversity (bison + venison vs salmon + turkey) and documented formula stability.
Full range breakdown
Adult dog range
Carnilove Salmon & Turkey (our primary recommendation) - 86/100 (A)
The flagship recipe. Fresh salmon first, 33 percent crude protein, grain-free, 15 percent fat. Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon are particularly well dosed: 1.8 percent total fatty acids, with a directly available EPA/DHA fraction.
Full ingredient list: fresh salmon (28%), dehydrated salmon (15%), dehydrated turkey (12%), sweet potato, peas, pork lard, dried spring onions, dehydrated carrots, salmon oil, vitamins and minerals.
The pork lard is worth a note: it is a cleaner source of animal fat than an unspecified "poultry fat", with a balanced saturated/unsaturated fatty acid profile. Not the best possible fat (the salmon oil also present in the list is preferable for omega-3), but far from an undesirable ingredient.
Carnilove Wild Boar & Venison - 85/100 (A)
The wild boar and venison formula is the ideal option for dogs sensitive to chicken or fish. Wild Central European boar as the first ingredient, venison as the second source. 31 percent crude protein. A less omega-3-rich profile but excellent for dietary diversification. Wild game meat naturally has a more favourable omega-6/omega-3 ratio than intensive farming.
Carnilove True Fresh Chicken - 84/100 (A)
The True Fresh line is Carnilove's ultra-premium sub-range. A high-moisture formula at 70 percent moisture instead of the standard 10 percent of kibble - technically between a wet food and a kibble, packaged in refrigerated pouches. Fresh chicken first, with added apple and spinach. Score slightly below standard kibble because dry matter protein density is harder to calculate accurately, and refrigerated storage is less convenient. Interesting as a complement or transition for dogs reluctant to drink enough water.
Puppy range
Carnilove Puppy Salmon - 84/100 (A)
The puppy formula adjusts calcium/phosphorus ratio for bone growth (1.4 percent Ca, 1.0 percent P - within FEDIAF growth recommendations). Increased DHA via salmon oil. Protein maintained at 30 percent. Confirmed absence of corn and wheat. A solid option for puppies whose owners want to avoid grains.
For large breeds, check that the calcium/phosphorus ratio fits your vet's recommendations - large breeds have specific growth needs detailed in our best puppy food 2026 guide.
Senior range
Carnilove Senior Salmon & Turkey Light - 82/100 (A-)
Senior formula with protein reduced to 28 percent (to ease kidney load) and fat at 12 percent (to limit weight gain). Glucosamine and chondroitin added for joint maintenance. Score slightly below the adult range because the protein reduction imposes trade-offs on density, but remains grade A for dogs aged 8 and over with reduced activity. For a comprehensive comparison of senior options, see our best senior dog food 2026 guide.
Cat range
Carnilove Cat Salmon & Turkey - 85/100 (A)
The cat range follows the same philosophy: fresh salmon first, added taurine (essential for cats, unlike dogs). 36 percent crude protein on dry matter basis - within the FEDIAF recommended range for adult cats. Grain-free, zero legumes in the top five ingredients. One of the rare grain-free cat kibbles under 7 EUR/kg to reach this protein level. For a complete comparison of cat options, see our best cat kibble 2026.
Real daily cost by dog size
| Size | Weight | Daily ration | Daily cost | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small dog | 5-10 kg | 80-140g | 0.52-0.91 EUR | 16-27 EUR |
| Medium dog | 15-25 kg | 200-300g | 1.30-1.95 EUR | 39-59 EUR |
| Large dog | 30-40 kg | 340-450g | 2.21-2.93 EUR | 66-88 EUR |
| Very large dog | 50-65 kg | 500-650g | 3.25-4.23 EUR | 98-127 EUR |
Indicative rations for moderately active adult dogs, Salmon Adult formula at 6.50 EUR/kg. Adjust per manufacturer guidelines and veterinary advice.
Carnilove vs Royal Canin: the uncomfortable table
| Dimension | Carnilove Salmon Adult | Royal Canin Medium Adult |
|---|---|---|
| PetFoodRate score | A (86) | C (58) |
| First ingredient | Fresh salmon | Corn |
| Grain-free | Yes | No |
| Crude protein | 33 percent | 22 percent |
| Protein origin | Named salmon + turkey | Untraced poultry meals |
| Fat | 15 percent | 12 percent |
| Price/kg | 6.50 EUR | 4.80 EUR |
| Daily cost (25 kg) | 1.56 EUR | 1.73 EUR |
| Supermarket available | No | Yes |
The daily cost advantage for Carnilove comes from nutritional density. The Salmon Adult formula contains 3,760 kcal/kg versus 3,200 kcal/kg for Royal Canin Medium - your dog eats fewer grams for the same energy intake. For a 25 kg dog, the daily ration is approximately 240g of Carnilove versus 320g of Royal Canin. Carnilove ends up cheaper per day despite the higher price per kilo. The Czech pet food industry: a quiet ascent
A decade ago the Czech Republic was almost absent from the European premium pet food map. Most European high-end production came from Ireland (Royal Canin), England (Lily's Kitchen), or the Netherlands (Edgard & Cooper). The challenger position was held by Americans (Orijen, Taste of the Wild) and Canadians (Champion Petfoods).
The 2015-2025 decade changed the picture. Vafo Praha, along with Brit, Markus Muhle, and several Polish brands, invested heavily in formulation R&D to develop competitive recipes, leveraging skilled labour costs below those of Western Europe and proximity to Central European forests for wild game sourcing (wild boar, roe deer, red deer).
The result: today, several of the best grain-free kibbles available in Europe come out of Czech or Polish factories, at prices that Irish or English brands struggle to match. Carnilove is the most visible example of this rise. To compare with another European premium brand, see our Edgard & Cooper honest review.
What owners report
Owner feedback on Carnilove is remarkably consistent across forums and specialist Facebook groups.
High palatability. Fresh salmon as the first ingredient produces a kibble with a strong aroma that attracts difficult eaters. Several owners report successfully transitioning picky dogs from supermarket brands to Carnilove where previous attempts with other premiums had failed.
Smaller, firmer stools. This is the direct consequence of better digestibility. A kibble at 33 percent animal protein produces less undigested residue than one at 22 percent protein with corn as the primary ingredient.
Coat condition. The salmon oil in the formula is the primary reason for positive coat reports. EPA/DHA fatty acids play a role in coat quality, particularly in double-coated breeds.
Difficult transition from tier D. A small number of owners report loose stools during the transition from heavily processed brands. This is expected - see the recommended transition protocol below.
Recommended transition protocol
| Day | Previous food | Carnilove |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | 75 percent | 25 percent |
| 4-7 | 50 percent | 50 percent |
| 8-11 | 25 percent | 75 percent |
| 12+ | 0 percent | 100 percent |
A slower transition (21 days) is recommended for dogs with a history of digestive sensitivity or those transitioning from a diet very high in grains such as corn or wheat.
Functional ingredients in detail
Dried spring onions. Present at trace dose in several formulas, they provide flavonoids (quercetin) with documented anti-inflammatory effects. Critically different from cooked onion or onion powder, which are toxic to dogs in significant quantities. At the trace dose used in Carnilove, there is no risk - but it is an ingredient that concerned owners regularly mention in forums. Onion toxicity in dogs manifests at doses radically higher than those used here.
Dehydrated carrots. Source of beta-carotene (vitamin A precursor), light soluble fibre, palatability. A clean functional addition.
Added salmon oil. On top of fresh and dehydrated salmon already in the top ingredients, added salmon oil at the end of the list guarantees a minimum omega-3 level even if a particular salmon batch is slightly less fatty than average. A nutritional safety layer.
Honest limitations of Carnilove
Limited transparency. Vafo Praha does not publish an annual supplier audit. We know that salmon comes from Northern Europe (Baltic and North Sea according to the brand) and wild boar from Central Europe, but without naming partners. This is the main concession relative to Canadian brands that identify their farms.
No B Corp or equivalent certification. Unlike Edgard & Cooper, Carnilove has no third-party certification on its sustainability practices. Packaging is recyclable but no formalised published commitment exists.
Limited cat range. Only two kibble references for adult cats. For cats with specific needs (neutered, sensitive, senior), options are more limited than with Orijen or Acana. Our best cat kibble 2026 covers the alternatives in detail.
Uneven distribution. Carnilove is still barely present in French or UK supermarkets. It is found online (Amazon, Zooplus, specialist retailers) and in specialist pet shops, but not in generalist chains. A practical barrier for those who do not shop online.
Is Carnilove the right choice for your dog?
Carnilove is ideal if:
- You want a European grain-free kibble under 7 EUR/kg with a grade A
- Your dog responds well to fish or game as the primary protein
- You want to reduce food allergy risk by avoiding chicken or beef (many alternative formulas available)
- You value European ingredient sourcing with geographic traceability
- You want a cheaper alternative to Acana with a similar nutritional profile
Carnilove is not optimal if:
- You want maximum supplier transparency (choose Orijen)
- You shop exclusively in supermarkets (choose Edgard & Cooper)
- Your dog is a Doberman or Golden Retriever at DCM risk - grain-free legume formulas deserve a discussion with your vet
Frequently asked questions
Is Carnilove available through vets?
No. Carnilove is not positioned on the veterinary channel. It is available online (Zooplus, Amazon, specialist shops) and in some premium pet stores. The absence of a veterinary channel is consistent with the brand's transparency philosophy: unlike Royal Canin, Carnilove does not build its image through clinical partnerships.
How long does it keep after opening?
6 to 8 weeks in an airtight container, kept away from light and humidity. Carnilove's resealable packaging is adequate but not as airtight as vacuum-sealed bags. For small formats (1.5 kg), not an issue. For 12 kg bags with a small dog, invest in a food-grade airtight plastic container.
Is Carnilove suitable for dogs with kidney issues?
33 percent protein is high. For a dog with a diagnosed kidney condition, a vet-prescribed renal support diet is required - not a standard kibble, however excellent. For a healthy dog, this protein level is entirely appropriate and beneficial.
Our final verdict
Carnilove is the best European grain-free option under 7 EUR/kg. At 6.50 EUR/kg and 86/100, it offers a protein profile superior to Taste of the Wild (33 percent vs 32 percent, with fresh meat first) and European sourcing that North American brands cannot offer.
If your budget stops at 7 EUR/kg and you want a European kibble with fresh meat as the first ingredient and zero grains, Carnilove is your best choice. If you can stretch to 7.80 EUR/kg, Acana Wild Prairie (90/100) is the logical next step. If 6.50 EUR/kg is still too high, Brit Care Salmon (84/100, 5.20 EUR/kg) remains grade A.
