Why this ingredient is used
Sorghum is a gluten-free grain used in pet food as a mid-tier carbohydrate source, positioned between premium grains (oats, barley) and budget grains (corn, wheat). It has a moderate glycemic index, decent mineral content, and good drought resistance which keeps the price stable. Sorghum is most common in Southern US-manufactured pet food (Iams, Eukanuba) where it grows locally. It is a safe, unremarkable cereal that PetFoodRate scores as B-grade: better than corn, not as good as oats or sweet potato.
