Why this ingredient is used
Potato is a common grain-free starch in pet food. It is gluten-free, cheap, and extrudes well. The glycemic index is high (similar to white rice), which means it spikes blood sugar and is not ideal for diabetic or overweight pets. Potato appears in many grain-free brands as the primary carbohydrate because it is cheaper than sweet potato and easier to source than lentils. PetFoodRate scores potato as B-grade: safe and functional but nutritionally basic. Sweet potato scores higher due to lower GI and higher vitamin content.
