L-carnitine is an amino acid derivative that shuttles long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production. In pet food, it is added to weight-management and sterilised formulas because it promotes fat burning while preserving lean muscle mass. Clinical studies show that dogs supplemented with L-carnitine at 50 to 300 mg per day lose fat more efficiently without losing muscle, which is critical for overweight indoor pets. It also supports cardiac muscle energy metabolism, making it a standard additive in large-breed and senior formulas.
