Why this ingredient is used
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are prebiotic fibres that pass through the stomach and small intestine undigested, then ferment in the large intestine where they selectively feed beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus populations. The result is a healthier gut microbiome, improved stool consistency, and better mineral absorption (particularly calcium and magnesium). FOS is the most common prebiotic in premium pet food (Royal Canin, Hill's, Purina ProPlan, Eukanuba all use it). The typical inclusion rate is 0.3 to 1 percent. Higher doses can cause gas and soft stools.
