Flaxseed oil
Excellent
Description
Plant source of omega-3 ALA.
Benefits

Risks

Why this ingredient is used
Flaxseed oil (linseed oil) is the richest plant-based source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. Dogs can convert ALA to EPA and DHA (the active omega-3s) at a low rate of around 5 to 10 percent. Cats convert ALA even less efficiently. So flaxseed oil is a useful complement to fish oil but not a replacement. Brands use it because it is significantly cheaper than salmon oil, provides a good omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, and adds coat shine within 3 to 4 weeks of consistent feeding.
