History and origin
Beef was the original protein in commercial pet food. The earliest canned dog food (Ken-L Ration, 1922) was horsemeat, but by the 1940s beef scraps from the human meatpacking industry became the standard. For 50 years beef dominated. The shift away started in the 1980s when chicken farming scaled up and undercut beef on price. Today beef is a mid-tier protein: more expensive than chicken, less expensive than lamb or salmon, and the number one acquired allergen in dogs.
Controversies and what to watch for
Beef is the #1 food allergen in dogs in peer-reviewed studies, affecting an estimated 34 percent of food-allergic dogs. This is not because beef is inherently allergenic but because it was fed so extensively for so many decades that a large portion of the canine population has developed sensitisation through chronic exposure. Environmental concerns are also significant: beef production has the highest carbon footprint of any pet food protein (approximately 27 kg CO2 per kg of protein vs 6 kg for chicken and 0.5 kg for insect protein).
